What to expect
Sessions at Ayla Therapies are held in nature, alongside horses, dogs, poultry and wildlife. This environment allows the space and freedom to explore what it is that settles our nervous systems. This will look quite different for each person because we all have different needs. Some may feel soothed by accessing the quiet space to slow down, reconnect, and listen more deeply to what’s unfolding within. Others benefit from awakening their senses and overcoming challenges, from big movement or from learning to look up and out to take it all in. There is no riding or ‘working’ the horses. Similarly, there is no pressure on you to ‘perform’ and no pressure to ‘fix’ anything. What is offered is space—space to breathe, to feel and simply to be.
During a session, you or your child might:
- relationally interact with horses
- halter, groom and lead a horse with their consent
- sit quietly beside an animal
- throw sticks for the dogs
- feed the poultry and collect eggs
- explore the bush setting
- talk freely, or not at all
- cry, laugh, fidget, run, jump, laugh, or just watch
- start to notice internal cues

At Ayla Therapies, emotional safety is the foundation for meaningful change. The therapy provided is evidenced based and, to complement learning through experience, you can expect to develop your knowledge and understanding of:

- horses – their natural instincts, social structures, communication, and learning
- the nervous systems of mammals – what is happening inside us and how this can impact us
- psychoeducation – models such as the Window of Tolerance and Polyvagal Theory
- resourcing – how to bring ourselves back to a regulated state
- the impacts of trauma
Why Horses? Why This Works
Horses are incredibly attuned to their surroundings. Their nervous systems are finely tuned to detect subtle shifts in energy, posture, breath and emotion. They live in the present. They don’t judge or analyse. They simply respond—with honesty and instinct. This makes horses powerful co-regulators. Their stillness can calm a dysregulated nervous system. Their responsiveness gently reflects without judgment.
In this environment, insight often comes organically for clients — through awareness, reflection, and the body’s natural intelligence — rather than through analysis alone.

People often feel seen—but not judged—when with horses. There’s no need to explain, justify or perform. The quiet connection between horse, client and facilitator enables trust, curiosity, calm.
This isn’t magic—but it can feel magical. You don’t have to talk. You don’t need to be ‘brave’, to push through, or to open up. Show up as you are and be accepted in that state. That’s where change begins—not with doing but with being.

Nature
Beyond the connections with animals, the stunning bush setting of Ayla Therapies allows the opportunity to acknowledge, value and reconnect with natural surroundings, seasonal cycles and foundational needs. We often leave the horses behind and feed our innate desire to seek a deep connection with the natural world. This might be exploring the sandy creek, seeking support in the granite boulders, noticing the horizon, the stillness or the movement in the trees. Expect gentle guidance that allows you to re-build your own world and the way you connect to it.
Ayla Therapies is suited to those who feel overwhelmed, disconnected, stuck or simply ready for a more embodied and compassionate way of relating to themselves. You don’t need prior experience with therapy or horses — only a willingness to meet yourself with honesty and curiosity.
